DENTAL SPECIALTIES OFFERED AND RECOGNISED BY THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH (MOH) MALAYSIA

The following dental disciplines are recognised as specialties :

  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthodontics
  • Periodontics
  • Paediatric Dentistry
  • Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Dental Public Health
  • Forensic Odontology
  • Special Needs Dentistry 

The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) offers scholarships to dental officers through the grant of the Hadiah Latihan Persekutuan (HLP) annually to further their studies in Master / Ph.D / Area of Special Interest. The application procedure is managed by the Training Management Division MOH [Bahagian Pengurusan Latihan, KKM (BPL KKM)]. Application can be made online via the eHLP Application System.

The basic requirements of the application to be followed by an officer are as follows :

  • Civil servant who are currently holding a permanent post;
  • Prospective candidates shall not exceed 45 years of age for Ph.D and not more than 50 years for Postgraduate / Area of ​​Special Interest;
  • Served MOH for a minimum of three (3) years (on application’s closing date);
  • Has been confirmed in the service on the closing date of the application;
  • Have an excellent performance in the Laporan Penilaian Prestasi tahunan (LNPT) scores for the last three (3) consecutive years with scores not less than 85% (12 months' worth of assessments per year)
  • Never received any Government sponsorship of the same level;
  • Has never rejected offer of Master / Ph.D / Area of ​​Special Interest offered within the past two (2) years;
  • Clear from any charge / disciplinary action and free from court charges;
  • Free from illness that can affect the ability to practise physically and mentally (unfit to practice) as contained in the Medical Act 1971;
  • Have not applied for a place in any institution of higher learning in the country or have earned a place of study but have not started studies at any institution of higher learning in the country;
  • Officers granted study leave without HLP are not eligible to apply for HLP;
  • Provides a complete copy of the Research Proposal and shall be submitted together with the application form; and
  • All submitted applications shall comply with the principles set out in the Garis Panduan Kemudahan Cuti Belajar Kepada Pegawai Awam Yang Mengikuti Kursus Jangka Sederhana Dan Kursus Jangka Panjang Secara Sepenuh Masa.

In addition to the above conditions, officers must comply with the following additional requirements:

  • Having additional qualifications such as MFDS / MJDF / MOrth / FRACDS / Basic Medical Science (BMS) will be given priority.
  • Passing the IELTS examination with a minimum score of 6.0 will be given priority.
  • Have served MOH for a minimum of four (4) years from the date of appointment until the closing date of the application.
  • Candidates can only apply for courses that are listed in the advertisement.
  • The candidate must undergo the interview screening process to ensure candidates possess the criteria as listed :
  • Appropriate and brilliant attitude;

  • Good soft skills,

  • High interest in the area of ​​expertise chosen;

  • Knowledgeable and sensitivite to the current situation; and

  • Able to communicate well in Malay and English.

All applications will be shortlisted and only applicants who fulfilled the requirements as advertised shall be called for the interview.

No. They need to undergo a pre-gazettement periods under a supervising specialist and be gazetted before they can be considered as specialists themselves. The pre-gazettement period for officers is as follows :

  • Six (6) months for officers who have undergone a four (4) year study period.
  • One (1) year training period [to complete a four (4) years of training] and six (6) months of pre-gazettement period for officers pursuing studies for three (3) years.

Dental specialists who have been gazetted have an opportunity of getting promoted to higher grades faster compared to a non-specialist officers. There is an additional grade; Grade 56 which being created as a specialist career path.
