Orthodontics is a branch of specialist dentistry which involves the use of braces (removable braces or fixed braces). Its treatment is concerned with the management of improper positions of the teeth, including tooth extraction, the use of braces to modify growth and to facilitate other dental treatments, such as, arranging the teeth prior to a jaw surgery or creating appropriate space for the placement of dentures, bridges or implants.

High quality orthodontic services in Ministry of Health Malaysia are provided by well trained orthodontists.. The objective of an orthodontic treatment is to provide an  orthodontic service to patients referred from the primary oral health care service and other specialists. Orthodontic services are provided to schoolchildren below 18 years old and patients who need interdisciplinary specialist care, such as, patients with a craniofacial deformity or hypodontia (patients whose number of teeth does not develop normally).

An interdisciplinary management of complex orthodontic cases usually involves combined clinic sessions to discuss the cases with specialists of other disciplines, such as, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Periodontists, Restorative Specialists, Paediatric Dentistry Specialists and Plastic Surgeons. The outcome of the discussion is to achieve the best possible solution when managing complex cases. The combined clinic sessions are usually held once a month, depending on the number of patients and the area of services.

Currently, there are a total of 59 clinics offering specialist orthodontic services under the Ministry of Health Malaysia, all over the country.
