Periodontology

Periodontology is a field of dentistry specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the supporting structures of the tooth, namely, the gums (gingiva), alveolus bone (alveolus), periodontal ligament and cementum. The treatment of gum diseases includes scaling, root planning, bite adjustment and periodontal surgery.

Periodontic specialist services are available at government dental clinics and works on referral basis. Treatments for periodontal diseases include preliminary treatments to deal with infections such as scaling, root debridement, soft tissue surgery such as gingivectomy, flap surgery, gum and bones regeneration as well as after-care support in maintenance phase.

Besides treatment for periodontal diseases, periodontic service also includes preparation for orthodontics and prosthodontic treatments, such as crown lengthening before placement of dental crowns and bridges and surgery for denture preparation. Full mouth rehabilitation includes dental implants and bone and gum regeneration.

In addition, many patients are given multidisciplinary approach and treated by multiple specialty due to the complexity of the case.
